Many owners notice it on day one: the music sounds like it’s coming through a blanket, vocals are unclear and the bass just booms. You’re not imagining it — there are three main reasons.
1. Speakers are an easy place to cut costs
A car is made of tens of thousands of parts, and audio is usually first in line for budget cuts. Factory speakers tend to use paper cones and small magnets with little headroom, so they distort as soon as you turn it up.
2. They’re placed for packaging, not for listening
Woofers sit low in the doors, aimed at your shins, and tweeters are tucked into corners. Much of the sound is absorbed by seats and legs before it reaches your ears.
3. A car cabin is a tough acoustic space
Reflective glass, absorbent seats and an off-centre listening position exaggerate some frequencies and swallow others. Without tuning, balanced sound is almost impossible.
How to fix it
- Upgrade the front speakers first — the best value step;
- Seal and deaden the doors for firmer mid-bass;
- Add a DSP to correct time alignment and EQ for your seat.
