What Is DSP Tuning? A Plain-English Guide

The same speakers can sound like two different systems before and after tuning. So what does a DSP actually do?

What Is DSP Tuning? A Plain-English Guide

A DSP (digital signal processor) is the brain of an audio system. It doesn’t make sound — it decides when, how loud and which frequencies each speaker plays.

Time alignment

From the driver’s seat you’re closer to the left speakers than the right, so sound arrives at different times and the image pulls left. The DSP delays the nearer speakers slightly so everything arrives together, putting the vocalist back in the centre.

Crossovers

Tweeters handle only the highs and woofers the mids and lows. Each driver does its own job, with lower distortion and cleaner sound.

EQ

The cabin exaggerates certain frequencies. Our tuner measures with an RTA, then flattens the response with EQ for natural, non-fatiguing sound.

In short: speakers set the ceiling — DSP tuning decides how much of it you actually hear.
